The first official Mother’s Day in the USA was celebrated as a national holiday in 1914, but Father’s Day wasn’t signed into law until 1972. What’s up with that? This year Father’s Day is June 18th, so celebrate the men you love with a gift of scent.
Chances are your dad (and most men who aren’t fragrance aficionados) has been wearing the same cologne for years, so it’s time to change up his fragrance game with a scent that is as unique as he is. INeKE Derring-Do (INeKE Ruhland): D is For Dashing. Derring-Do is a standout Fougère fragrance for Father’s Day 2023. Translucent citruses blend with silky cyclamen (Persian violet) and a sea spray-like note that makes it shimmers and glisten. As this continues, it blends the warmth and spiciness of cardamom and pepper with the tender green of fern and creamy magnolia petals. It is spicy, yet floral fresh AND clean! It’s a unique take on a “Freshie.” I am going to order Derring Do for my dad. –Michelyn
Until 2021, Parfums de Marly Haltane was a Harrods exclusive. Haltane is a potent fragrance that is both traditional and modern, contrasting the brightness of bergamot with the depth of leather and oud, the herbaceous quality of clary sage and lavender with a well-rounded praline accord which along with saffron are particularly prominent. The sillage is powerful and the scent lingers over 12 hours. For the dad who wants to make a statement. –Michelyn
LilaNur Parfums Agar Épicé (Fabrice Pellegrin):The Indian niche house of LilaNur Parfums was a 2x Fragrance Foundation Finalist 2022, the first year they launched and each perfume is created by a French nose. Agar Épicé lives up to its name… it’s all about woods, spices and REAL Indian oud. The composition is brightened by zingy ginger and the guaiac wood adds a gourmand facet. If dad (or you) needs an incentive to get dressed up for a night on the town or is looking to reignite romance, buy him this-Michelyn
Tempus Vitae Carpe Diem (Kyle-Mott Kannenberg with Ida Meister as evaluator): He’ll seize the day with this woody chypre with oakmoss in its warm, resinous heart. If you can’t take dad to the theatre or a concert, or if he loves to read then Carpe Diem is the next best thing. Its inspiration comes from a “love and fascination with venerable concert halls and well archived libraries with wooden shelves…” Senior Editor Lauryn Beer’s review really captures Carpe Diem perfectly. “What really takes me by surprise is how textural Tempus Vitae Parfums Carpe Diem becomes as it wears. it opens with contrasts: a soaring, sparkly bergamot and the milky, woody smell of parched paper. Sandalwood and labdanum combine early in the fragrance’s development to create its central, old book odor… And it hooks me. The longer I wear this fragrance, the more I want to scent my whole apartment with it.“
Kajal Homme II (Chris Maurice & Rosendo Mateu): When I saw the “II” after Kajal Homme II, I thought it might be a flanker of 2015’s Kajal Homme. What they have in common are the perfumers (perfumers Chris Maurice and Rosendo Mateau, RIP). Kajal Homme II is a completely different fragrance. If you are looking for a Father’s Day Fragrance that is classy without being stuffy this is it. The aromatic opening of clary sage, rosemary and lavender add balance to the heart of cloves, peach and cinnamon notes. The base of Virginia cedar wood is particularly elegant at the dry down –Michelyn
