35 years after the launch of California, Jaclyn Smith is back in the perfume industry. • Basenotes

Jaclyn Smith is probably best known for her role as Kelly Garrett in the iconic television series “Charlie’s Angels,” which aired from 1976 to 1981. Cashing in on this success was Max Factor, who made her the face of Epris in 1984, along with the tag-line, “Part of the art of being a woman is knowing when not to be too much of a lady.”

Five years later, and Max Factor launches California – where not only is Smith the face of the fragrance, she’s also the brand. A year later, and the launch is followed up with California for Men.

In 1991, Max Factor was acquired by Procter & Gamble, which pretty much ended Max Factor’s perfume business. Many of its perfume brands such as Blasé, Le Jardin and, of course, California were sold off to Dana.

Fast-forward to 2024, and Jaclyn Smith is back! Not with California (sadly), but new fragrance, Jackie, with notes of bergamot, aldehyde, amber, earthy musk, sandalwood and heliotrope.

Smith has partnered with RJTB Group and HSN to launch the new fragrance, which she describes as “soft, timeless, feminine and powdery.”

Smith told fashion industry magazine, WWD. “It doesn’t hit you in the face, and it lasts all day. When you get into bed at night and you’re reading, it might be faint, but there it is!”

Smith has always had a love for fragrances, which stems from her mother’s love of Guerlain. “I have loved fragrance ever since I was a little girl. My mom used Guerlain; she also mixed some of her own fragrances. My mom would sometimes put oils on the stove and that scent would permeate through the house.” Smith told WWD.

“I remember even when she visited me later in her life, when she opened a suitcase, that scent was in her clothes, in her suitcase. It’s amazing what scent can do to memory. You don’t want to lose that. Scent has always been a part of my life. My mom thought it helped define your personality, that it was the finishing touch, or what underscored your look. That’s romantic, isn’t it?”
