Indie Perfume Spotlight – Custom Parfums • Basenotes

In Indie Perfume Brand Spotlight, we question different brands to find out more about their brand and the people behind it. This time we question Lisa Gomez of Custom Parfums

About You

Tell us who you are?

Lisa Gomez – perfumer, perfumer lover who wants to spread the joy of fragrance.

How did you get into the perfume industry?

I’ve always loved fragrance.  I wrote my college thesis on the fragrance and cosmetics industries and my first professional job was in retail managing sales of fragrances and cosmetics for a large department chain.  I moved away from fragrance for many years but returned in 2022 as it really is my first love.

What was the first perfume you ever purchased?

Halston.  I can remember how sophisticated it made me feel when I wore it.

What is your favourite meal?

Tough question! But if I had to pick one, I would say chicken pot pie.

Where is your favourite place?

Easy question – my home is my very favorite place.  My favorite place to travel is France: I am a Francophile and I love the culture, the scenery, the food, the history.

Do you have an interesting party trick or any hidden talents?

I’m a really good cook.  At one point, I considered going to cooking school.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Julia Louis-Dreyfus – I find her hilarious and I have been likened to her a few times.

About your Brand

Describe your brand in one sentence.

We create custom, one-of-a-kind, handcrafted fine fragrances for individual clients.

Where does the name of your brand come from?

Where does the name of your brand come from? I wanted a name that was self-explanatory and that is why I chose “CustomParfums”

Who are your perfumes for?

My fragrances are for clients that want to own a custom fragrance that is unique as they are.

Tell us about your latest perfume.

For myself, I recently created a odorous homage to Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite called “Blue Pepper”.  As noted in the album liner notes (and like my fragrance) music “is bursting with attitude, the musical equivalent of a chili pepper.”   Fragrance top notes of pepper, bitter orange and bergamot are lively and energetic.  Middle notes of geranium, water jasmine are happy and bright.  Base notes of leather, ambroxan, and vanilla are strong, sexy, and warm.

If someone wanted to try your fragrances, which one would you recommend they try first and why?

Because custom fragrances are personal and not mass produced, I sell very little retail.  If folks would like to understand and experience the quality of my work, they can email me at [email protected] and I’ll send them some samples.

What challenges do you want to overcome for your brand?

Marketing and getting new clients has been my biggest challenge.  Most of my clients are word-of-mouth referrals and building a client base has been slow.

What is unique about your brand?

Few companies can offer the chance for someone to own their very own fragrance, created just for them and not just a mass customized product.  I work with only a few clients at any one time and I create something unique for each. I retain the final formulas for individual clients so no one else will ever wear the same fragrance.  And I do it at a very affordable fee.
